ABANDONED & STRAYS
Be kind to abandoned and stray animals

What to do

Cats
Kittens are not feral (wild). They are domesticated and their mothers teach them how to be clean. Cats only become feral when they have been living wild for many years. They need neutering, vaccinating, training, a home, love and an outside life. Avila Fornell Vets in Chiclana on Saturday mornings takes kittens in at 10am sharp. Put bows on them. Any not re-homed by 2pm must be taken away.
Leave water and food out for the stray dogs and cats in your street. Consider adopting one or two of them. Get them health checked and neutered immediately. (see Vets page)

Dogs
Galgos Español are the Spanish breed that have been used for centuries for hunting, a very noble breed. Similar to Greyhounds and Whippets, they make excellent pets and are gentle, loyal, and even tempered. Their short hair ensures that they are easy to care for. They do live well with cats but are better in a home where there are only dogs.

Abandoned
Take a photo using your phone or digital camera and email it to Los Animales who will post it on the Lost page. Or take it to your local Guardia Civil - if it has an up to date microchip they will inform the animal's vet and the owner. Or ask friends if they would like to adopt one or two of them. Always wear gloves and get someone to help you in case the abandoned animal bites. They will be frightened. Vets sell very reasonable cardboard pet carriers.

Or check with the following people and websites when you find an abandoned animal for advice.

www.anaaweb.org (ANAA) La Asociacion Nacional Amigos de los Animales you will need to look up on the internet in a local Cyber Café see Yellow Pages (Paginas Amarillos). Rescued animals receive all the veterinary treatment they need and are made as comfortable as possible.

Galgos Español
These are the Spanish version of Greyhounds and are bred and used for hunting. They are often kept in lock-up outhouses in the countryside. The hunter may have three dogs that are only used at weekends for their hunting hobby. When they about five years of age their youth, agility and speed decreases and the owner no-longer wants them. Horror stories of how they are treated at this time fill the files of all animal welfare organisations. Examples are of being left stranded in the countryside or by the side of the road, worse thrown out of moving cars, shot and left to die, or left hanging on a fence. Inconceivable cruelty.
Visit www.refugiokimba.org for photographic evidence.
Galgos are historically a noble magnificent breed and make excellent pets. They need only two twenty walks a day and lots of love. Adopt one today please visit Adoption and Re-homing page.
