Collars & Microchips

Dogs should wear collars and should be trained to walk with a lead to prevent road traffic accidents. They should have some ID identification on them in the form of a collar disc, with your surname, telephone number, address if possible or post code. Even better in addition a microchip which can be fitted by your local vet.
It is the law to have your pet microchipped. You will be fined if the police check. For example if your dog is off the lead and causes a road traffic accident the minimum you will receive is a fine for not having a microchip and a possible insurance claim against you.
Please note microchips wherever fitted, only have one address. Please ensure you update the microchip to your new current address at your next visit to the vet. It only costs 10 euros to update the central database.
A variety of collars are available from the pet shop. Ensure that two fingers fit under the collar when fitting. Elasticated collars are best for cats in case they get caught in trees and shrubs. Choker chain collars for dogsshould only be used when they are 6 months old, and should be worn in the shape of a nine. Choker chain collars are excellent for training purposes combined with treats. (see Training page) Metal identification discs are available from the pet shop and the pet hospital shop in Cadiz. (see Vets page) Ensure you purchase only small metal identification discs for cats and small dogs. Jewellery shops will do the engraving.
