NEUTERING Male Cats 40e, Female Cats 70e, Dogs 65e Bitches 90e At six months

Neutering is essential to keep the cat and dog population controlled to halt the birth of unwanted kittens and puppies. Los Animales advocates Trap & Neuter Campaigns.

1 in 5 cats die from Cat Leukemia before they are three years old. Cats can become pregant when four to five months of age while still kittens themselves and can become pregnant 3 times a year. Each time producing up to 8 kittens. Get your female cat neutered at five months- its only about 70 euros. It is your obligation and responsibility as a human being and as an owner. Many Vets will offer discounted prices (certainly for two cats or more - take a friend's pet and ask) or tell them what you can afford. You will become their customers for life needing vaccinations, flea/tick/mosquito/worm treatments and microchip fitting in the future. Female dogs (bitches) come on heat (in season) twice a year for three weeks each time. They can have up to 8 puppies. Both the mother and the puppies need alot of care, and expense for vaccinations, to ensure their good health. Unwanted young animals are often abandoned and ultimately suffer and have short, unhappy lives. Domesticated animals have been bred so that they need human intervention. We cannot just turn our backs and ignore them. They need our help and they should be valued for the creatures and the personalities that they are. Please get your cats, kittens and dogs neutered otherwise they in turn breed, so please help to stop this cycle. Your donations will go towards financing Trap and Neuter Campaigns of street and stray cats and neutering rescued dogs cats and kittens.

Cats
Always have male cats neutered. Please see Vets page for a list showing your closest practitioner. It is a cheaper procedure because it is an easier operation. Also better for the cat as there is a shorter recuperation period and a lower risk of infection. Another benefit is that it stops male cats spraying indoors (urinating to mark their territories). It also can help reduce any potential aggressiveness to other males where they get into fights sometimes biting each other. This biting if the cat is a carrier can spread any diseases for example Cat Leukaemia (Feline Panleucopoemia) which kills 1 in 5 of all cats. Adult males can be successfully adopted. Best if you do not live near a busy road, let them be outside during the day, offering food in the home and a warm, dry place to sleep at night. They will offer wonderful companionship and keep any mice and rats at bay.

Many Vets offer castration/neutering at reduced rates tell them what you can afford. They are in business and not charities but they will do what they can to help. Of course you will be a customer in the future for vaccinations and flea/tick protection treatmentsdn microchip fitting.

After females cats have been neutered they need a couple of weeks after care. It is essential to neuter females if you do not have time to care for them when they are pregnant. Kittens are born blind and the mother needs good quality food whilst pregnant and a safe place for the birth. Sometimes veterinary intervention is needed with difficult births. Please see Links page and the R.S.P.C.A. and Blue Cross for downloading and printing Fact Sheets on mother, birth and kitten care.

Dogs
Dogs come on heat (in season) when they can become pregnant about twice a year. A litter of puppies can vary between 2 to 8 dogs therefore neutering is essential. Dogs can start breeding from as young as 6 months. It is a falacy that they need to have one set of puppies. How do you know they will get a good caring home. Even better adopt a dog or puppy from one of the rescue charities please see Links page. Neutering protects your female from breeding with an unsuitable mate, eg. large breeds with small breeds and also protects the female from breeding if she or the male are not healthy and disease free.
